He designed his first collection under the Marc Jacobs label in 1986, and in 1987 was the youngest designer to have been awarded the Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent by The Council of Fashion Designers of America. His reputation for designing with sleek and smooth sophistication grew and he was then awarded the great honor of the Women’s Designer of the Year award in 1992.

To the delight of fashionable men everywhere, he quickly (1994) produced his first full collection of menswear that few designers can rival. Most of his collections make references to past decades, from the 1940s to the 1980s with clever and highly-developed enhancements.

He is seen regularly out and about in the New York City celebrity social scene, dressing famous actresses like Chloé Sevigny, singer M.I.A. and director Sofia Coppola. All these stars have all been tapped to appear in Marc Jacobs ad campaigns.
